India's capital Wakes Up to Dangerous Smog After Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of the world's most polluted city found themselves inhaling severely hazardous air that fell into the "severe" category.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels

Various sections of Delhi registered an AQI above 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended threshold established by the World Health Organization.

Particular areas, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of 1800, amounting to 15-20x higher than safe limits.

Pyrotechnics Ban and Recent Developments

Beginning in 2020, officials had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their major role to the hazardous pollution that blankets the capital as the cold season begins.

Yet in recent months, the current local leadership appealed to the judicial authority to request a relaxation of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been doubted by environmental experts as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a balance between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Legal Verdict and Implementation

Despite concerns of medical and ecological activists, judicial authorities complied with the proposal, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during designated time windows throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was considerable violation of the designated hours across the capital, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Numerous monitoring devices throughout the city registered air quality spiking around midnight to the most severe measurements observed during celebrations in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Implications

The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the festival also triggered a controversy with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region partially attributing declining atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles originating in India following the celebrations.

Long-Standing Pollution Crisis

Extremely elevated levels of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a serious problem for over a decade and a half, with the condition showing no improvement.

During celebratory seasons, the amount of toxic particulate matter in the air has been documented to increase dramatically to 70% higher the most severe levels ever measured in Beijing, which was formerly considered as the world's most polluted urban center.

Multiple Pollution Contributors

This crisis in Delhi is attributed to a mix of various sources including transportation pollution, dust, development work, waste incineration and pollutants from agricultural fires in neighbouring regions of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, rural residents regularly ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, creating dangerous haze that remains stagnant over the city as winter air descends.

Health and Financial Impact

Public health and economic impact on the roughly thirty-three million people living in the capital region is enormous, according to numerous research.

The contaminated air causes elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can potentially cause malignancies.

Air quality crisis is projected to be causing approximately 10k early deaths each year in Delhi.
