Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the score on the screen and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.

The Toffees: The team head to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
